A Private server is one that is not yet developed enough to be on the hosted tab and/or is not wanting to be there. Usually, these servers have little in the way of content, will hire most development positions, and won't hire lazy positions (such as ET, GP, ect). Also, you will sometimes find that they may be abandoned as well. One such example (before it's recent removal from the list) was Elemental Kingdoms.
